Garry Winogrand - Blog Response

Garry Winogrand is an American street photographer from New York City. Most of his work relies on people he sees when he is walking around. They are very relaxed photos, not posed or super specific in what they're looking for. I really like this style of photography. I don't hate editorial photography, but these feel much more raw and I enjoy that.

I really like this photo above. It is very simple at first glance, but the people themselves are all very complex. You can see many different relationship dynamics through them and it was captured very well. While I do really like this photo, I do see that this style comes with some downsides. It appears that this photo was taken very quickly (or Winogrand is good at getting people to trust a stranger who wants to take their photo) so we can assume he did not have time to make all the technical details perfect. I'm specifically looking at the top right corner when I say this as it seems a little lost.

His style and ability in these photos makes me a little jealous. Nowadays people are a lot more concerned when a stranger take their photo. When I was in NYC taking photos, I was hesitant to take photos of people in fear of them getting angry. One specific instance I remember was seeing a homeless man outside of a popular store in a very crowded area. I wanted to take a photo of him because it depicts different class levels and the reality of cities very well, but I didn't want the man to think I was making a mockery of him and be offended. My photos were very limited because of this.

And for a little bonus, here is this picture of these two people holding monkeys. It seems very silly and I like that. Monkeys are my favorite animal so I like this photo.
